My friend shared with me a habit that I believe has been the primary contributor to her success in business, today she is responsible for large business at Microsoft.
Twenty-four years ago, she decided that she would be fully present and locked into whatever she chose to do at work. If she is in a meeting with you, she is not multitasking or splitting her attention. She accepted the meeting so she will be there and ready to contribute.
Over the course of this leader’s career this single practice has compounded and has had an exponential effect on her relationships and her own personal growth. Her job requires collaboration with dozens of leaders to drive meaningful impact. The relationships she has built over the years have enabled her to be effective in her responsibility.
Since my conversation with this outstanding leader, I have tried to be more present and focused. She inspired me and I hope to be better at developing relationships by being fully present with those I speak to. This especially applies to my closest relationships including my wife and my kids. I know I can be more present with my kids, and I am committed to being better for them by following her example.
This leader’s habit is inspiring to me. I would love to learn from you. What is a habit you have practiced that you feel has contributed the most to the leader you are today?
Let me know here.
