Increasing Confidence

I’ve been thinking about confidence and how one can build confidence. There is a lot to learn in this space and I found something that feels durable and has given me a practical way to think about building my own confidence.

All of us have a desire to be more confident in some area of our lives. Here are some areas that I’ve wanted to grow in confidence:

  • Public speaking
  • Teaching
  • Selling an idea
  • Persuading others of a truth
  • Parenting

The list could go on and on and your list will look different. Regardless of what your list looks like there is a simple heuristic you can take to improve confidence.

Demonstrate courage over time to build confidence.

It requires courage to get in front of people and speak. It requires courage to provide discipline to a 2-year-old repeatedly. It requires courage to sell an idea to someone who you feel may not be ready to accept it.

When we repeatedly demonstrate courage, our confidence will increase.

My invitation to you today is to find the area in which you want to increase your confidence and then go forward with courage and do it as often as you can to build your confidence over time. You will fall short of your expectations and that is okay. It’s repetition and consistency that will grow your confidence and your capability.
