Shared Leadership

Recently I went rappelling with a large group and I observed some interesting archetypes of leadership. Specifically, what it looks like to share leadership.

Our repelling expedition, if you can call it that, consisted of a group of 25 people. Most of which were novices or had never been rappelling before. I am in the novice group. As we spent time together it was fascinating to witness clear leadership roles come out.

The Authority

This is the one who all looked to as the authority figure on the trip. They were confident and direct, it was clear they felt accountable for progress on the trip.

The SME

This is the one who knew the ins and outs of rappelling. They took care of each one of us and made sure we were safe, secure, and having a good time.

The Jester

This is the individual that kept our spirits high. They were cracking jokes and helped us have a fun time despite hours of being in the sun and lots of waiting while others went through the slot canyon.

The Nurturer

This individual made sure everyone was cared for and included. They went from small group to small group encouraging, complimenting, and loving everyone in the group.

The Caboose

As the name suggests, this person took up the rear to ensure no one got left behind. No one was behind the caboose.

Throughout the hike and rappels down the slot canyon different people filled these roles at various times but one was always present. Each person contributed in a meaningful way that made the trip fun, enjoyable, and like we accomplished something significant.

The challenge for us was to get down the slot canyon safely. Each archetype played a role in accomplishing our goal. This isn’t a research-based list of archetypes but rather archetypes that I observed on this one trip.

What have you observed in successful projects? What type of person is there to drive success and ensure progress and thriving?

Let me know here.
