It is only appropriate that I report back on my becoming list for 2022 and then share the new list of what I would like to become.

Rather than goals I want to strive to become something. My actions are a reflection of who I am and who I am becoming.

Widening Your Time Aperture

Recently I was pondering on how I want to do so much more than I’m currently doing. There are great opportunities in my role at work where we can make a big impact. At home, there is much I want to do with my wife to raise our children. I feel I am happier than I have ever been in our marriage and yet I can see we can be even better and stronger. All of this combined with the fact that I believe there is more contribution inside of me that is not being shared with the world, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and feel out of balance. I find myself asking if I’m spending time on the things that really matter most.

Reflection Has Revealed Growth

At work I look after a program designed to help senior leaders progress at Microsoft. COVID-19 introduced interesting challenges to our program, as it was originally designed to be in person. In one case, a key experience of the program, we did not convert to virtual because we felt the impact in person could never be matched virtually.

Things changed and we decided to convert the experience. My first thought was, there is no room for failure with this audience – we must succeed. This is one of the core experiences leaders have at Microsoft and there is no room for failure at this level.

2020 Year in Review

This coming year I am going to try a new experiment. I plan to do a year in review with my wife. We will reflect on the past year and discuss what we would like to do in 2021.

You may want to consider doing the same. I will share the prompts my wife and I plan to work through. You are welcome to use these questions, modify them, and/or customize them to fit the needs of your relationship.
