Learning Rest and Recovery the Hard Way

There is learning from others and learning from your own experiences. I learned from my own experiences the hard way about recovery and stress recently despite knowing it intellectually.

The months of January and February felt non-stop at work, and this increased all levels of stress in my life. I tried to be proactive and take a 4-day weekend to attempt to properly recover and reset.

Performance

Last week I attended a Growth Summit and connected with one of my good friends who has run a 200-mile race. I have always been in awe of her ability to run that race – the physical endurance required seems virtually inhuman. The even more challenging part of training she told me was the mental training. Then in the context of both physical and mental growth she shared the following formula.

What Does Scale Look Like?

At Microsoft, the fiscal year ends June 30th. This typically means there is a mad rush to get all work done before the end of the month so we can realize expenses in the month and year that they happened. This year I have had not only my standard projects that need to be completed before the end of June, but I also have a new project at work, and we are working as a family to get into a home which has a potential move-in date of July 1.

Living Uncertain

The Limbic System in our brain is the part of the brain that is responsible for managing our threat response. The Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) is the part of the brain that is most associated with critical thinking and is responsible for executive functioning.
