Drawing the Perfect Unicorn

A few days ago I watched my daughter as she attempted to draw a picture of a unicorn. After a few pencil lines she would crumple the paper and start over on a new sheet of paper. I soon learned she wanted the picture of her unicorn to be perfect and if it wasn’t perfect she didn’t want to keep it.

One thing that fascinated me about observing this is how hard she was trying to align her ideal state to her current lived reality. She could see the gap and couldn’t stand it. I also have the same challenge. When I am not aligned with my ideal state of being I feel an intense sense of imposter syndrome. I feel like I want to crumple the paper and start over. This is a natural occurrence in human nature. We crave excellence. We will not always be aligned with our own ideals. We are learning and there are going to be gaps between how we are living and how we aspire to live. Even over time and with intentional effort we will still experience a misalignment, but we will get better.

I invite you to write down one thing you will do to help you get back in alignment when you recognize a misalignment with your ideal state.

We are all trying to find alignment to our values and desired state of being. We aren’t always there. Remember to be kind – we all need a little grace as we go through the process of learning and growing.
