Full Fidelity and Compression

Micro learning is a trend in Learning and Development that has been building momentum over the last few years. Tik-Tok and Instagram Reels has fueled this momentum with more and more influencers in the educational space.

One of the drawbacks to micro learning is the loss of fidelity of the topic. The compressed time sacrifices nuance that may be important to learning and practical application.

An audio file in full fidelity shows richness in highs and lows. In contrast, a compressed audio file contains the essential sound content, but the details of the highs and lows of the audio is lost. For a professional musician, a compressed audio file would be unacceptable. For my 4-year-old daughter a compressed audio file is great for kitchen dance parties.

What is important is to know when the fidelity matters.

Think about your life right now. Where is it important to have high fidelity and where is it okay to be compressed? Write down on a piece of paper or your journal two specific areas that need high fidelity and two specific areas it is okay to have compression.
