On a recent star tour in Bryce Canyon, I had the opportunity to look through several high-powered telescopes.
Some of these telescopes were almost as big as I am, and all required a step ladder to get to the eye piece and see the object it was directed at in space.
On every one of those telescopes there is a focus dial. The tour guides focused them on the space object but everyone that looks through the telescope will have to adjust the focus for their eyes.
I did not believe the tour guide at first. Surely, we all have similar enough eyesight (including those wearing contacts and glasses) that each person would not have to focus the telescope every time. Well, I was wrong. Every time I stepped up to a telescope, I had to focus it for myself. My wife experienced the same thing.
Leadership is the same way. Everyone that wants to lead must figure out their focus. Once that is dialed in (and it will not look the same as others) the leader will be able to drive progress with clarity.
What are you doing to focus yourself as a leadership instrument?
This is an exercise of self-development. Learn as much as you can about high leverage practices and behaviors. Then experiment, do what feels right for you. Over time your efforts will compound, and you will become a more effective leader.
