Finding The Work You Are Meant to Do

This week we delivered an event designed to help leaders dig deep into who they are, why they work and how they can use that as a filter for making decisions.

The experience is deeply impactful and for some life changing. One of the things I learned this week is about our orientation in leadership.

Leaders who have an inward orientation are more selfish and struggle to make sense of their purpose. It is easy to see in this event because they disengage from the process and when asked to share something it is shallow and void of emotion. This inward orientation is hollow and cannot lead to purpose or fulfilment.

Leaders who have an outward orientation are selfless and feel their purpose. They are deeply engaged in the process and share their purpose with energy and emotion. This outward orientation ironically is what enables one to find their own meaning and purpose.

Take 60 seconds to breathe with your eyes closed and center yourself. Then ask – what orientation do I lead with?

Is it an inward or outward orientation? The more you focus on others and serving others in an outward orientation the center of what you are meant to do becomes clearer.
