Creator vs Player

At a leadership development event I was hosting I took some time to reflect on what I am called to do. The event was at a golf course, and I was looking out over the course and I saw various holes. Each hole has its own obstacles, terrain, and challenges.

I considered the golfers playing the game. The skill, talent, and practice required to be a great golfer is tremendous. I do not know much about golf, but I do know it is an incredibly difficult game to master. As I considered those players, I thought about the creator of the golf course. Who designed this course? The skills needed to design an incredible golf course are different than the skills needed to play that same course. These skills are no less difficult to master. It means the creator must design something for golfers to be challenged and improve their own game without being so difficult it is impossible for the golfer to feel progress.

Some of us are players, some of us are creators – both necessary and required for the world we live in. I feel called to be a creator, a designer of the “course”. I design experiences for leaders to push themselves to their edges and play in the area of growth and learning.

I was moved by how much I could feel by taking 20 minutes of quiet time and taking in my surroundings as queues to my purpose. Try it out, no matter where you are take 15-20 minutes of silent reflection (without any technology or distraction) and look for what you feel. Something will emerge and I know it will help you take your next step in your learning journey.
