Adaptation and Preparation

This month I came across a paradox that struck me as incredibly powerful.

One must be highly prepared to adapt.

We need leaders that can adapt to ever changing situations and challenges. Part of me felt like to do this you have to be willing to let go of “always getting it right” and the judgment of others. Some of that is true but this paradox feels more impactful as I ponder it.

Here are some examples that will light it up for you.

A business that is fiscally responsible and has prepared cash reserves for a “rainy day” is able to adapt to changing market conditions without worrying about risking the whole company because the business has prepared for uncertain moments. A business who has not prepared will not be able to make strategic risks because doing so could jeopardize the entire company.

A teacher who has studied and taught a topic for many years has stories, examples, and insights at the ready. When put into a situation where learners are curious, they are able to adapt to the situation and teach what is needed in the moment. Those who have only “read the book” will not have this ability to adapt to learner needs in these situations.

As a parent, if you think through situations your kids may go through ahead of time, you can have prepared thoughts to teach your children how to exercise their agency for growth and learning. When you get that random question in the car on the way to soccer practice, you’ll be ready and can adapt to the situation and not fumble with an answer that they will not understand.

As you ponder this paradox, you will find your own examples.

What matters enough to you that you’re willing to put in the time and energy to be highly prepared so when you are needed, you can adapt to whatever situation comes your way? Write this down and consider making a plan on how you will be better prepared.
