The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is the part of the brain that is responsible for complex behaviors. It is often referred to as the executive center of the brain. The PFC is energy intensive and limited in its capacity, and processes things in a serial manner.

My wife and I have a fascination with the stars, the winter sky is our favorite. When we have a chance to stand outside and look at the stars together it serves as a reminder of the place we occupy in the universe and helps provide perspective.
Light pollution makes looking at the stars difficult in populated areas. Light pollution is the brightening of the night sky caused by streetlights and other man-made sources, which inhibits the observation of stars and planets. (Definition from Oxford Dictionaries). Light pollution is represented on maps for star gazers to find the best places to look at the stars. This site one example of such a map.
(more…)Recently on a road trip to visit family, my wife and I were talking about what we want to accomplish in our future. My desire is to have a visual of what we want our family to become so we can intentionally create moments and experiences that will lead to that future.

(more…)Throughout my career I have viewed leadership through many different lenses. I felt like I needed to work hard to “convince” someone to give me the authority to lead a group. Permission and/or authority do not make a leader.

(more…)Last week my wife and I welcomed our 4th child into our family. Words cannot describe the special feeling I get adding a child to our family. My heart has been made bigger and it will take me a sometime to re-learn how to sleep.
What I’ve learned from this experience is actually a reminder of a pattern I’ve seen in my life multiple times. It is the most visible after the birth of each of our children.
