Precision vs Power

A few weeks ago, I learned of something that intuitively makes sense but caused me to reflect.

In the context of AI you have two tensions at play. You have precision and you have power. If you want a chatbot AI (like ChatGPT or BingChat) to be precise and accurate all of the time then you have to sacrifice some of the potential power to get the repeatability.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to lean into the power side of this tension you will get much more inconsistent results (the same prompt will yield different outputs) but the results can be truly mind blowing.

As leaders we have a similar tension. We can have greater precision and provide certainty in some areas, but it means we are trading off empowerment, vision, and autonomy by doing so. Lean into power and you provide clarity on direction and leave space for empowerment, vision, and autonomy and the results can be truly mind blowing.

My invitation to you (and to me) is to lean into power as a leader. The results are not certain, and we will absolutely get it wrong, and it will open opportunities for exponential growth or impact.

For me this means I need to lean into vulnerability in a more meaningful way at work. The results are uncertain, but I know vulnerability holds power for me.

I’d love to know what leaning into power looks like for you. Let me know here.
